Professional Credentials

In an increasingly competitive world, the purchasing and supply management profession has gained the respect and recognition it has long-deserved, due in large part to the certification programs offered by ISM. These designations certify the holder has the experience and knowledge to meet the challenges our profession presents.

Certified Professional in Supply Management Certification

The Institute for Supply Management launched the Certified Professional in Supply Management® (CPSM®) program in May 2008. The CPSM® is the credential that surpasses the demands of the international marketplace with multi-faceted skills in areas such as supplier relationship management, commodity management, risk and compliance issues and social responsibility.

Requirements for the CPSM® certification include:

  • 3 years of full-time, professional supply management experience with a regionally accredited bachelor's degree OR 5 years of supply management experience without a degree
  • Pass 3 CPSM Exams.

More information on the CPSM® certification is available at the ISM web site.

The CPSD™ is a professional designation for supply professionals who demonstrate knowledge, skills and expertise in supplier diversity. CPSD™ is also for business professionals with responsibility for strategic diversity initiatives. Requirements for the CPSDTM certification include:

  • Successfully pass Exam 1 of the Certified Professional in Supply Management® (CPSM®), Foundation of Supply Management. This requirement is waived if the candidate holds a current CPSM® or C.P.M.
  • Minimum of five years of professional (nonclerical, nonsupport) supplier diversity or supply management experience (does not need to be primary function) OR three years of professional (nonclerical, nonsupport) supplier diversity or supply management experience IF the candidate has a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or international equivalent.

To recertify, CPSD™s must earn 60 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) during their three-year certification period.
